異国情緒あふれる面をつけて舞う！約1200年前の舞楽を継承する貴重な芸能

約1200年前に中国・朝鮮などから伝えられた舞楽を継承し、古代の宗教儀式の様子を色濃く残している「蓮華会舞」。毎年、弘法大師の命日にあたる4月21日に、隠岐国分寺本堂前の特設舞台で奉納の舞が公開されています。2人の子供が菩薩の面をつけて眠りだす『眠り仏』や、昇龍の面をつけて飛び上がったり滑稽にふるまう『竜王』など7番を披露。国際色豊かな面・衣装を身につけ、胴（どう）・笛・饒鉢（にょうはち）を用いて雅楽が奏でられる中で舞います。

エキゾチックな雰囲気が漂う面の数々。最初の舞である『眠り仏』では、まぶたを閉じ、薄く目を開いた菩薩の面をつけて舞います。


A rare dance passed down over 1200 years
-With dancers’ masks reminiscent of faraway lands-

Court dances and music have been passed down for over some 1,200 from China and Korea. The Lotus Dance is highly reminiscent of ancient religious rituals. Every year, on April 21st-date of enlightenment of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), dances are offered from the special stage at Okikokubunji Temple’s main hall. Seven dance performances including two children wearing the special Bodhisattva mask to portray the “Sleeping Buddha,” as well as the “Dragon King” dance where the dancers wear rising-dragon masks-a comedic dance where the dragon jostles and jumps. Donning masks and costumes with an international flavor, the dancers perform to court music with drums, flutes, and bowls.

This performance features an array of tantalizing masks. In the first dance, the “sleeping Buddha,” the dancers wear the mask of the Bodhisattva, known for its half-closed eyes representing contemplation.
