巨大な男綱・女綱を作り、神前で結ぶ！神話に由来する「お綱はんの結婚式」

初瀬川の南北に位置する江包・大西地区で、五穀豊穣と子孫繁栄を祈願して行われる田遊び祭り。別名「お綱はんの結婚式」とも呼ばれ、江包地区の春日神社で男綱（おづな）を、大西地区の市杵島（いちきしま）神社で女綱（めづな）を作り、2月11日に素盞嗚（すさのお）神社で2本の綱を結び合わせる「入舟（いりふね）の儀式」を執り行います。昔、大洪水で2人の神様が上流の三輪から流れ着かれ、素盞嗚尊（すさのおのみこと）を江包が、稲田姫を大西が救って祀り、その2神が毎年正月に結婚式をあげたことに由来するといわれています。

入舟の儀式の前には、男綱の尾を田んぼに巻いて土俵を作り「泥相撲」を取ります。泥が多くつくほど、豊作になるといわれています。

-The “wedding” of the ropes rooted in legend-

The Shinto ritual of Taasobi (“play in the rice fields”), held in the Ettsumi/Onishi area located to the north and south of the Hasegawa River, is performed to pray for a bountiful harvest and for the prosperity of one’s descendants. This festival is also known as the “wedding of the sacred ropes.” The “husband” and “wife” ropes are made at the Kasuga Shrine in the Ettsumi area and Ichikishima Shrine in the Onishi area respectively. Then, on February 11, the two ropes are tied together at Susanoo Shrine in the Irifune (“ship arrival”) ritual. According to legend, long ago, during a great flood, two gods were brought down the river from Miwa, located upstream, where Prince Susanoo-no- Mikoto (male) was helped at Ettsumi and and Princess Inada (female) at Onishi. Thereafter, the two were worshipped in a “wedding” every new year. The festival is rooted in this legend.

Prior to the ceremony for the arrival of the ships, the “husband” rope is set up in a rice field to create a sumo ring for “mud sumo.” It is said that the more mud there is, the better the harvest!
