An all-night dance before the gods
-A mysterious noh play passed down for 500 years-
The old annual festival known as the Ogi Festival has been passed down at Kasuga Shrine ever since it was built in 807. In a representation of the deity, three cedar trees of approximately two meters in length each are tied together with rope, while the top is decorated in paper streamers. Kurokawa Noh is performed in front of this deity, known as Ogi. On February 1st, the performance, held on the Noh stages set up in the homes of the person on duty of the Kamiza and Shimoza teams begins with the shikisanban melodies as accompaniment to the daichifumi (program to pray for a bountiful harvest) as well as Buddhist rituals-which are only seen at the Ogi Festival. Noh plays and kyogen performances are held from morning through night. On February 2nd, the kamiza and shimoza teams will dedicate a Noh play at the Kasuga Taisha shrine.
”Daichifumi” is performed prior to a noh play at 6 pm on the first day. The children dance in the pure kind of way that only children can-adding to the performance-and also sing difficult phrases that they practice for an entire month beforehand.
