大松明を走って引き出し、焼き払う！大晦日から夜を徹して行う炎の祭事

出羽三山神社で大晦日から元旦にかけて夜を徹して行われ、「歳夜祭」とも呼ばれる祭事です。注目は、悪魔に擬したツツガムシをかたどった大松明を、引き出して焼き払う「大松明引き」。23時頃、五番法螺（ほら）の音を合図に、若者衆が一斉に大松明を引いて走り出します。大松明を立てる速さと燃え具合で勝敗を決め、翌年の豊作や豊漁を占います。新年を迎えると、羽黒山伏の領土を確かめる「国分」や、新たな年の火をきりだす「火の打替神事」を行います。

15時から行われる「綱まき行事」。大松明に登上した松聖が加持した後、切り刻まれた大松明の節が参拝者に投げ与えられます。

A fire festival held through the night of New Year’s Eve

This festival runs through the night of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at Dewasanzan Shrine. Therefore it is also referred to as the “New Year’s Eve night festival.” The highlight of the festival is the ""Great Torch Pulling,"" in which torches in the shape of tutsugamushi, which mimic demons, are burned.

Around 23:00, at the signal of a special loud chant, all the young people participating in the festival run with their poles. The winners are determined by how fast the teams raise their poles and burn them. The whole process is a kind of divination predicting the harvest and fish catching of the following year. To ring in the New Year, rituals delineating the Haguro Yamabushi region, known as “Kokubu,” as well as the “changing of the flame” are also held.

The rope-making event is held as of 15:00. Once the matsuhijiri bless the poles, chopped parts from the piles are thrown at the festival participants.
