祭概要

清浄な御神火で、祈願札や絵馬を焼納！神話の地で厳かに斎行される炎の祭り

かつて霧島神宮があった高千穂河原古宮址（こぐうし）の斎場で、御神火を奉献する祭りです。11月10日の早朝に神饌所（しんせんじょ）で清浄な火が採火され、10時の「天孫降臨記念祭」で本殿外陣にお供えされます。その後、御神火は神職の手で斎場に運ばれ、夕闇せまる17時より「天孫降臨御神火祭」が厳粛に斎行されます。御神火を松明に移し、神職が大祓詞（おおはらえのことば）を奉唱しながら崇敬者それぞれの願いを託した祈願札・絵馬を焼納。同じ時刻に、高千穂峰の頂上においても行われます。

祭典後には、勇壮な「霧島九面太鼓」と「霧島神楽」を奉納。参列者には餅もふるまわれ、御神火の残り火で焼いて食べます。

At this festival, a sacred flame is offered at the funeral hall of Takachiho-gawara Kogushi, where Kirishima Shrine was once located. The sacred flame is lit in the early morning of November 10th at the shrine. It is then offered outside the main hall at 10 am, during the Tenson Korin (“descendants of the gods”) Commemorative Festival. Later, the flame is carried by hand by the head priest to the funeral hall. As twilight approaches around 17:00, the solemn Tenson Korin flame offering ritual is held. Then the fire is transferred to the poles topped with pine. The head priest performs a great purification ritual chant, while amulets and votive pictures brought by devotees are burned. Meanwhile, the same ritual is held at the same time atop Mt. Takachiho.

After the festival, the bold Kirishima Kumen-Daiko drums and Kirishima Kagura dance are performed as an offering. Participants are given mochi rice cakes, which are cooked on top of the remaining embers of the sacred fire.
