ひょっとこたちの表情が笑いを誘う！陽気で滑稽な踊り手が街をパレード

市の無形民俗文化財に指定される伝統芸能「永田のひょっとこ踊り」が披露される、宮崎県日向市の夏の風物詩。8月5日の本祭りでは、約2,000人の踊り手による陽気なパレードが行われます。赤い着物に白い帯、豆絞りの手ぬぐいを身につけ、顔にはひょっとこ・おかめ・きつねのお面。さまざまな表情のお面が笑いを誘い、観客を惹きつけます。日本全国からグループや個人の踊り手が参加し、踊りの美しさやチームワークを競い合います。

8月4日の前夜祭では「ひょっとこ踊り」の個人戦を開催。ステージ上できつね・おかめ・ひょっとこの各部門で技を競います。

The Nagata Hyokko Odori Dance, a traditional performance and designated locally as Intangible Folk Art, is a traditional summer event in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. On the main day of the festival, August 5th, a lively parade of some 2,000 dancers is held.

The dancers wear a red kimono with a white sash, plus spotted hand towels. They also wear masks of hyottoko, okame (old woman), and kitsune (fox), charming the audience and making them laugh with a wide variety of expressions. Groups of people as well as individuals from around Japan participate, competing on the beauty of the dance, teamwork, and more.

Individual competitions are held on August 4th, the night before the festival. The dancers compete on stage, based on their dance skills in the hyottoko, okame (old woman), and kitsune (fox) categories.
