米どころ・秋田の夜を照らす黄金の稲穂　竿燈（かんとう）を操る差し子の妙技に拍手喝采！

稲穂に見立てた竿燈（かんとう）で五穀豊穣を願う東北三大祭りの一つです。日没後に始まる「夜本番」には1万個以上の提灯を提げた280本もの竿燈が集結。ゆらめきながら輝く竿燈の美しさに、会場は熱気に包まれます。注目は、差し子と呼ばれる男たちが竿燈を手のひらや額、肩、腰にのせてバランスを保つ妙技。「どっこいしょーどっこいしょー」の掛け声が響く興奮と緊張の中、披露されます。妙技は、朝から行われる「竿燈妙技大会」でも見ることができます。

竿燈は「幼若（ようわか）」から「大若（おおわか）」まで4種類あり、「大若」は高さ約12ｍの竹竿に46個の提灯を提げ、重さは約50kgにもなります。

One of the three Great Festivals of Tohoku, held in prayer for good harvests with “kanto” lanterns, which are made to resemble rice stalks. 280 kanto poles fitted with over 10,000 lanterns gather during the main evening event starting at sundown. The whole venue gets filled with excitement over the beauty of the kanto lanterns that shine as they waver.
The highlight of the event is the feats of the men known as sashikos, balancing the kanto lanterns on the palms of their hands, faces, shoulders, and hips. The feats are performed in an exciting and thrilling atmosphere to the booming shouts of ""Dokkoisho! Dokkoisho!” Such feats can also be seen during the Kanto Stunt Exhibition starting in the morning.


There are four types of kanto lanterns, ranging from the “yowaka” to the “owaka”. The “owaka” is about 12 meters tall, with 46 lanterns attached to bamboo poles, and weighs about 50 kilograms.
