祭概要

阿蘇神社祭神である国龍神（くにたつのかみ）の婚儀を祝う諸行事を7日間かけて行い、豊穣を祈念する農耕祭事・田作祭。特に見応えがあるのが、3月13日の「御前迎（ごぜむか）え」で行われる火振り神事です。結婚相手となる姫神のご神体を神職が迎えに行き、途中で嫁入り前の禊（みそぎ）や化粧の儀を済ませ、夕刻に阿蘇神社に到着します。姫神の一行が参道に入ると、住民たちが萱（かや）束に火をつけ振り回して歓迎します。3月16日には夫婦神の前で、神職が稲作の様子を模擬的に演じる「田作神事」も行われます。

田作祭4日目に姫神を迎える「御前迎え」。樫の木で作った姫神のご神体を枝葉に包み、神職と青年の2人が担いで阿蘇神社へと向かいます。


The Tatsukuri Festival is an agricultural festival held in prayer for good harvests and lasts for 7 days with rituals celebrating the wedding ceremony of Kunitatsu-no-Kami, which is the festival god of Aso Shrine. What is particularly worth seeing is the fire swinging ritual at the Gozemukae pre-marriage meeting on March 13. The priest goes out to meet the sacred body of the princess god who is the marriage partner, completes responsibilities such as the purification process before the marriage and the makeup ritual on the way back, and they arrive at Aso Shrine in the evening. When the princess god procession enters the approach, the residents light thatch torches on fire and swing them around. On March 16, the priest performs the rice field tilling ritual, which depicts the cultivating of rice, in front of the married gods.

The Gozemukae pre-marriage meeting on the 4th day of the Tatsukuri Festival. The sacred body of the princess god made of Japanese oak is wrapped in branches and leaves, and the priest and a young boy carry it off to Aso Shrine.
