中世の芸能文化を色濃く残す！約500年間も守り続けられる郷土芸能
Entertainment culture from medieval times still remaining strong!Folk entertainment that has been passed down for about 500 years.

約500年も前に修験者がもたらして以来、下北半島・東通村の14集落などに脈々と受け継がれてきた伝統芸能。修験の行法を基調としつつ、猿楽・曲舞など中世の諸芸能も取り入れており、その面影を今も強く残している日本演劇史上極めて貴重な芸能と評価されています。正月には各集落の家々や集会所で能舞を披露。特に1月初旬の「東通村郷土芸能発表会」は、能舞をはじめ獅子舞・田植え餅つき踊りなど地域の郷土芸能が一堂に会するため見ごたえ満点です。

仮面や用具には江戸時代などに作られたものも多く残っており、先人の魂や伝統を大切に継承している様子が窺えます。

A form of traditional performing art that has been passed down in 14 settlements in Higashidori Village on the Shimokita Peninsula ever since it was introduced by a priest about 500 years ago. While it is based on Shugen practices, it is considered an extremely precious form of Japanese theatrical entertainment that shows strong traces of performing arts from medieval times such as Sarugaku and Kusemai. Noh dances are performed at various homes and halls in the settlements at New Year's. The Higashidori Village Folk Entertainment Performance in early January is particularly spectacular because it features all kinds of local performing arts in addition to Noh dances such as lion dances and rice planting and rice cake pounding dances.

You can see that the spirit and tradition of the forefathers have been passed down with care as many of the masks and outfits used are those that remain from the Edo period.
