A unique Kyoto festival, which is one of the three Great Fire Festivals of Japan.

天皇の住む御所にお祀りされていた由岐大明神を、940年に鞍馬の地に御遷宮した時の様子を伝え遺す由岐神社の例祭。18時になると「神事にまいらっしゃーれ」を合図に、篝（えじ）に一斉に点火。「サイレイ、サイリョウ」と囃しながら松明を担いで練り歩く様や、山門前で大松明を立てた若者がひしめき合う様は壮観です。山門の石段を御神輿が下りる際、2人の青年が逆さ大の字になって担い棒に掴まる「チョッペンの儀」は、この地の成人式の名残です。

An annual celebration at Yuki Shrine that is reminiscent of the time when Yuki Daimyojin, which was enshrined at the Emperor’s palace, was transferred to Kurama in 940. Torches are ignited in unison at the cry of “Shinji ni mairasshare (come visit the ritual)!” when 6 p.m. comes. The sights of the parade of torches being carried to the chants of “Sairei, Sairyo” in hopes for a great festival, and the youths crowding together with Taimatsu torches in front of the entrance, are spectacular. The “Choppen ceremony”, where two youths turn upside down with their arms and legs spread out on poles while a portable shrine is carried down stone stairs, is a remnant of the local coming-of-age ceremony.

御神輿の上には鎧武者が乗り、後ろの綱を町の乙女たちが引きます。この綱を引くと「易く出産ができる」と古くから伝えられています。御神輿の上に人が乗り、女性も参加する珍しい祭りです。

The portable shrine carries an armored warrior and the rope in the back is pulled by maidens of the town. It has been said since ancient times that women can give childbirth easily if this rope is pulled. This is one of the rare festivals where women can also get on top of a portable shrine and participate.
