新居浜市の9地区が運営する、全54台の「太鼓台」が祭りの主役。金糸銀糸に彩られた豪華絢爛な山車で、大きいものは高さ約5.4mにも及びます。瀬戸内海沿岸に多く見られる太鼓台ですが、新居浜市のものはとりわけ勇壮華麗。約150人の男衆により担ぎ上げられ、威勢のよい掛け声とともに市内各所を練り歩きます。天高く差し上げたり、長時間担ぎ上げたりして、太鼓台同士が競い合う「かきくらべ」は迫力満点です。

The 54 drum stands of the 9 districts of Niihama City play the main role in this festival. The largest of the extravagant floats decorated with gold and silver thread stands up to about 5.4 meters tall. Many drum stands can be seen on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, but those from Niihama City look especially grandiose and magnificent. It is lifted up by about 150 men and carried throughout the city to energetic shouts. The Kakikurabe event, where the drum stands are lifted high up in the air, kept up for long periods of time, and compete with each other, is spectacular.

日が暮れた後は、各地区の太鼓台が一堂に会しライトアップされる「夜太鼓」で、日中とは異なる美しさを楽しめます。
The event where the drum stands from various areas gather together and are lit up after the sun goes down presents a beautiful scene that is different from that in the daytime.
