逃げ回る人々に、神が泥を塗りたくる！無病息災を祈る宮古島の奇祭

宮古島の島尻地区では旧暦9月上旬に、3体の仮装神が出現します。仮面を付け、ンマリガーと呼ばれる井戸の神聖な泥を全身に塗り、シイノキカズラのつる草を巻き付けた「パーントゥ」です。奇声を発しながら、逃げ回る人々に誰彼かまわず泥をなすりつけることで、厄を祓い無病息災を祈願します。また上野野原地区では、仮面を付けた小学生に太鼓・ほら貝・女性たちが続き、陽気に集落を回って厄払いをする「パーントゥ」が旧暦12月最後の丑の日に行われます。

Three costumed gods appear in the Shimajiri district of Miyako Island at the beginning of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar. The masked “Paantus” are entirely covered with sacred mud from a well called the “Nmariga” and wrapped with Derris vines. They drive away evil and bring good luck by making strange noises while smearing mud on everyone as they try to run away. In the Ueno Nobara district, there is a “Paantu” event with a lively procession, which consists of a masked elementary school student, a drum, a giant triton, and women, going through the village as evil is warded off on the last day of the ox of the twelfth month in the Chinese calendar.

悲鳴と笑い声を上げながら逃げる人々に、泥を塗るパーントゥ。観光客・子ども・車・家などにも容赦なく塗りたくります。
