民俗芸能の宝庫と言われる北上市のあちこちで、100を超す民俗芸能が披露される3日間。特に人気の「鬼剣舞」は、いかめしい鬼（仏の化身）の面を付けた踊り手が勇壮に舞う、約1,300年前から伝わるとされる民俗芸能です。8月3日の夜に北上駅前の大通りで開催される「民俗芸能公演」では、8つに分かれた会場に100団体以上が集結。そのフィナーレを飾る「鬼剣舞大群舞」は、かがり火の前で200人もの踊り手が一斉に舞い、激しさと荘厳さに魅了されます。
Three days of over one hundred folk performing arts presented in Kitakami City, known as the treasury of folk performing arts. The Onikenbai sword dance, which is a roughly 1,300-year-old folk performing art where dancers wearing masks of stern-looking ogres (the Buddha personified) dance valiantly, is particularly popular. Over a hundred troupes gather at a hall divided into eight during the folk performing art presentation, which is held on the main street in front of Kitakami Station on the night of August 3. Two hundred dancers all dance together in front of a bonfire during the grand Onikenbai sword dance array in the finale, as they amaze spectators with their intensity and magnificence.

8月4日の夜には北上河畔で、1万発を打ち上げる「花火大会」と、北上川に灯篭を浮かべる「トロッコ流し」を開催。
Ten thousand fireworks are set off and lanterns float at the bank of Kitakami River on the night of August 4.
