豪華絢爛な屋台の上で、人形が舞う！数百名が町々を巡る大行列も迫力満点
See puppets dance on an extravagant stage!
The huge procession of hundreds of participants is definitely a magnificent sight to see.

匠の技が息づく華やかな屋台が集う、日本三大美祭の一つ「高山祭」。春と秋に開催され、春の「山王祭」では国の重要有形民俗文化財に指定される12台の屋台が曳き揃えられます。両日とも午前・午後に1回ずつ、屋台の上で披露されるのが「からくり奉納」。熟練の綱方が幾本もの綱を操り、まるで生きているかのように人形を遠隔操作します。また14日の「夜祭」では、それぞれ約100個の提灯を灯した屋台が光の軌跡を描きながら、漆黒の町並みを巡ります。

神輿を中心に総勢数百名が町を練り歩く「祭行列」では、獅子舞や闘鶏楽、裃姿の警固など、伝統的な衣装に魅せられます。

The Takayama Festival, held both in spring and autumn, is known as one of the three most beautiful festivals of Japan. It gathers extravagant floats that display skilled craftsmanship. Its spring incarnation, called the Sanno Festival, involves twelve floats, which are nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Asset. The “Karakuri Hounou”, where offerings are performed by mechanical puppets on the floats, is held once in the morning and once in the afternoon on both days. Seasoned rope workers maneuver countless ropes to control puppets from a distance so skillfully that the puppets look alive. Floats with about a hundred lanterns each travel through the deep black townscape while creating trajectories of light during the “Night Festival” on the 14th.

Traditional costumes such as those used in the lion dances, as well as cockfighting music being played, and warriors in kamishimo robes ready to protect the Emperor, are enchanting to see at the “festival parade”, where hundreds of people march down the streets surrounding portable shrines.
