笛や太鼓に合わせて暴れる虎を退治！約300年前から浦賀に伝わる郷土芸能

1720年に奉行所が伊豆下田から浦賀に移転した際に伝えられたとされる民俗芸能。横須賀市西浦賀にある為朝神社の特設舞台で、近松門左衛門の「国姓爺合戦（こくせんやかっせん）」を題材に演じられます。主人公である和藤内（わとうない）の登場、唐子（からこ）の踊りに続き、いよいよ虎が出現。虎は親子2体で、親虎には成人、子虎には青少年が2人ずつ入り、笛や太鼓に合わせて舞台上を自由に振る舞って数種の芸を披露します。最後に和藤内が虎を成敗し、みえを切ります。

太唐人（おおとうじん）が引き連れた唐子の踊り、虎の出現、暴れる虎の退治という場面から成る、歌舞伎や唐人踊りも取り入れた民俗芸能です。


Taming the rampaging tiger with a flute and drums
A local tradition brought to Uraga roughly 300 years ago


This folk performance art is said to have been brought to the area in 1720, when the local magistrate’s office was relocated from Izu Shimoda to Uraga. A story based on the play known as “The Battles of Coxinga,"" by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, is performed on a special stage at Tametomo Shrine in Nishi-uraga, Yokosuka City.

The main character Watonai appears, followed by Karako Odori dance, and finally two tigers, parent and cub. The parent is played by two adults, while two children play the young tiger. Accompanied by a flute and drums, various kinds of free dance performances play out on the stage. The story ends with Watonai subduing the tiger.

A folk performing art that also incorporates elements of Kabuki and Karako Odori dance, consisting of scenes of a Karako Odori dance led by Otojin, the appearance of a tiger, and the extermination of a rampaging tiger.
