The dancers are accompanied by spirited calls of “sanyare”
The Furyu Odori ritual folk dance of the southeast Lake Biwa area

This folk performance art, which has survived in seven parts of Kusatsu City, comprises an important component of the Japan Heritage “Lake Biwa and its Surrounding Waters: the Water Heritage of Prayers and Lifestyle.” People with fans and musical instruments surround dancers in colorful costumes and happi coats, cheering them out as they dance. In all of the areas where the dance is performed, the dancers also call out “sanyare,” a word said to have derived from the Japanese word for “happiness.” The dance involves prayer for a bountiful harvest and warding off illness.
The dances and costumes differ by area, such as the dynamic drums of Shima and the bright-colored hats worn by children of the Yagura and Shimogasa districts.
