縁起のよい笠をかぶり漁師たちが踊る！漁業ゆかりの地を巡って豊漁を祈願

鰹漁業の「夏がれ」に当たる旧暦6月10日に魚の供養と豊漁祈願のために行われる、約300年前から続くと言われる伝統芸能。漁師や漁業関係者たちが、色鮮やかな笠や鯛・鰹の描かれた浴衣をまとい、鉦（かね）・太鼓・音頭取りの周りで円になって「シットロト シットロト」と囃しながら踊ります。踊り始めは、室戸市元の恵比寿神社。早朝4時半から1日かけて、旧室戸町内の神社仏閣や奈良師の浜など漁業ゆかりの地を巡って約30か所で踊りを奉納します。
「災が去る」にちなみ、笠には猿の人形が大量に縫い付けられています。この笠をかぶれば無病息災に過ごせると言われています。


The fishermen dance with auspicious conical traditional hats, winding through important places of the fishing sector as a prayer for a great catch.
This traditional performance, held at the low point of the bonito fishing season, which is June 10th of the old calendar, serves as an occasion to make offerings of fish to the gods and to pray for a plentiful catch. The event dates back approximately 300 years. Fishermen and other people engaged in the fishing industry wear bright-colored conical hats and traditional yukata decorated with sea bream or bonito. They form a circle around performers holding percussion instruments and dance as they whisper "shittoroto, shittoroto." The dance begins at Ebisu Shrine, Muroto City. Starting at 4:30 am, and lasting the entire day, the dancers visit about 30 places associated with the fishing industry to offer their dance to the gods, including shrines and temples in the old Muroto district and Narashi Beach.
Various monkey dolls are sewn to the hats, as the word for "monkey" is a homonym for "be gone" ("calamity be gone!"). Wearing this hat is said to protect the wearer from illness.
