夜を徹して、鬼が舞い、見物人も舞う！小江戸の町で、山車を曳き廻す
Ogres and spectators all dance through the night!
An ancient Shinto ritual that has been passed down for over 700 years.

11月から3月にかけて北設楽郡の17地区で開催される、約700年前から続く神事芸能。鬼の舞をはじめ約40種類の舞や神楽が、夜を徹して1日中行われます。「生まれ清まり」を実現するための呪法である反閇（へんべ）を踏み、大地の精霊を呼び起こすと言われる「榊鬼」は、特に有名です。「て～ほへ、てほへ」と掛け声をかけたり、和歌を連ねた「歌ぐら」を太皷・笛に合わせてうたったりしながら、神とされる鬼や舞手・セイト衆（見物人）が一体となって盛り上がるのも花祭の特長です。

クライマックスを飾る「湯ばやし」では、浴びると病にかからないとされる釜の湯を、4人の舞手が所かまわず振りかけます。

A Shinto ritual that has been held for roughly 700 years in the 17 divisions of the Kitashitara District from November to March. Roughly 40 types of dances, including the ogre dances and Kagura music, are performed all night. The Sakaki-oni ogre, who performs the “Henbe” incantation and calls out the spirits of the land to achieve birth and purification, is particularly famous. One feature of Buddha's birthday festival is the holy ogres dancing together with the spectators to the chanting of utagura with shouts of “Te-hohe, Tehohe”, waka poems being read, and the sound of drums and flutes being played.

Four dancers splash warm water from a pot at people everywhere as a ritual for preventing illness during the climactic yubayashi event.
