全長約5mの牛鬼が街中を練り歩き、家々に首を突っ込んで悪魔祓い！

A 5 meter-long ox-demon walks through the streets and sticks its head in peoples’ houses to ward off evil spirits!

7月22日「ガイヤカーニバル」や7月23日「宇和島おどり大会」など、熱気あふれる各種催しで盛り上がる四国有数の夏まつりです。注目は7月24日の「親牛鬼パレード」。鬼のような顔に長い首、赤い布やシュロで覆われた牛の胴体、剣にも似た尻尾を持つ、巨大な山車「牛鬼」が練り歩く様は迫力満点です。同時開催の「和霊大祭」で7月24日夜に行われる「走り込み」も有名。松明の灯る須賀川を神輿が走り回り、若者たちが御神竹をのぼり御幣を奪い合います。

7月23日に宇和島湾内で開催される「海上打ち上げ花火」。夜空に咲き誇る大輪の花が、まつりのムードを一層引き立てます。

This famous summer festival in Shikoku is full of excitement, with various events such as the Gaiya Carnival on July 22 and the Uwajima Dance Show on July 23. The highlight is the “Huge Ox-demon Parade” on July 24. The sight of the huge ox-demon float with a demon face, long neck, torso covered with red cloth and palm fur, and a tail that resembles a sword traveling about is magnificent. The “Warei Festival”, which is held at the same time on the night of July 24, is also famous for its “running in” event. Portable shrines are carried along the torch-lit Suka River and young people climb up sacred bamboo stalks as they scramble for wooden Shinto wands with paper streamers.

Fireworks are displayed over the sea at Uwajima Port on July 23. The huge flowers that light up the night sky liven up the mood of the festivities even more.
