美しい裏声や三味線の旋律が心に響く！奄美群島の人々が歌い継ぐ故郷の民謡

琉球・薩摩藩・アメリカの支配に翻弄されてきた歴史をもつ、鹿児島県の奄美群島。こうした時代に生きた島人たちは、その生き様や教訓・想いなどを歌詞や旋律に織り交ぜて歌い継いできました。奄美群島では、生まれ育った島や集落（シマ）の唄を「島唄（シマ唄）」と呼び、さまざまな民謡が愛され続けています。心に響く美しい裏声や、哀調を帯びた三味線の旋律は、島唄ならではの魅力。年間を通じて、各地のイベントや発表会などでも楽しめます。

2月12日開催の喜界町「シマ唄・しまユミタ発表会」のシマ唄部門では、子どもから大人まで島内の唄者（うたしゃ）が歌声を披露します。

The beautiful falsettos and melodies of the shamisen touch the heart.
Local folk songs passed down by the people of the Amami Islands.

The Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture have a history of being ruled by the Ryukyu, the Satsuma Clan, and the United States. The islanders who lived during these times put their way of life, morals, and thoughts into lyrics and melodies, and passed their songs down to the next generations. On the Amami Islands, songs about the islands and villages (shima) where people were born and raised are called “shimauta”, and various folk songs continue to be endeared. The beautiful falsettos and plaintive melodies of the shamisen that touch the heart are the distinct charms of the shimauta. They can be enjoyed at events and recitals held at various locations throughout the year.
The shimauta division of Kikai Town’s “Shimauta/Shimayumita Recital”, held on February 12, has both child and adult shimauta singers from the island performing with their singing voices.
