約5,000人の裸坊が乱舞する様は壮絶！菅原道真公の御霊を慰める神輿行列
The sight of the roughly 5,000 half-naked men in high spirits is spectacular!A procession of portable shrines held to comfort the soul of Sugawara no Michizane.

903年、無実の罪により薨去（こうきょ）された菅原道真公。その御霊を無実の知らせで慰めるため、勝間の浦のお旅所まで渡御（とぎょ）する祭りです。江戸時代に川で身を清めて潔白を示したことから「裸坊」と呼ばれる一般奉仕者は、なんと約5,000人。11月23日18時に数百人の裸坊が一斉に拝殿になだれ込み、「兄弟ワッショイ」と掛け声を上げながら神輿を担ぎ出します。約500kgもの御網代輿（おあじろこし）が58段の大石段を滑り降る様は圧巻。お旅所まで往復する勇ましい行列も見物です。
全国に先駆けて誕生した女性の神輿神事「天神おんな神輿」。11月24日正午から、200人以上の女性が町を練り歩きます。

防府天満宮

In 903, Sugawara no Michizane died in exile after having been blamed for a crime he did not commit. This is a festival where portable shrines are carried to a resting site in Katsumanoura to comfort his soul and announce his innocence. There were roughly 5,000 general servants known as “Hadakabo” who purified themselves in a river and protested his innocence during the Edo period. On November 23 at 6 p.m., hundreds of these half-naked servants all gather at the alter and carry portable shrines to the shouts of “Kyodai wasshoi (Brothers, heave‐ho!)”. The sight of a roughly 500-kilogram wickerwork palanquin sliding down a huge 58-step stone stairway is overwhelming.
The valiant procession of men going to and from the resting site is also a must-see.

The portable Tenmangu shrine being carried by women is the first ritual of its kind that is held Japan.
Over 200 women begin traveling through the streets at noon on November 24.
