約770年の歴史を誇る、櫛田神社の祇園神に対する奉納神事。期間中は、高さ10m超の飾り山笠が市内各所に展示されます。祭りが最高潮に達するのは、7月15日の「追い山笠」です。櫛田神社の境内に舁き山笠を舁き（担ぎ）入れ、清道旗を回って境内を出るまでの所要時間を競い合う「櫛田入り」を午前4時59分から開催。水法被をまとう舁き手たちの全力疾走に、大勢の見物客が沸きます。境内を出た後に、約5kmのコースを懸命に舁き回すのも迫力満点です。

十数カ町によって構成された自治組織「流」ごとに、毎年さまざまな意匠の舁き山笠・飾り山笠が作られています。

Decorated floats over 10 meters tall are displayed at various locations in the city during the festivities. The climax of the festival is the “Oiyama Float” on July 15. The “Kakiyama Float” is carried into the grounds of Kushida Shrine, and the carriers try to outdo each other in time making loops around the sacred flag starting at 4:59 a.m. The sprinting of the carriers clad in “mizu happi coats” gathers attention from many spectators. The carriers struggling to complete a roughly 5 kilometer-long course after leaving the grounds is also exciting to watch.

Kakiyama Floats and decorated floats of various designs each year by individual autonomous “nagare” organizations consisting of over ten towns.
