約380年もの歴史を誇る、針綱神社の祭礼。祭りの主役は、愛知県の有形民俗文化財にも指定されている、3層からなる車山（やま）13輌です。人々で賑わう城下町に繰り出して、満開の桜並木にも劣らぬ華麗さで見る者を圧倒。特に重さ3トン超もの車山を、男たちが豪快に持ち上げて方向転換する「どんでん」は大迫力です。夜になると、それぞれ365個の提灯を灯した車山が町を巡行。まるで錦絵を見ているかのような、絢爛豪華な光景に魅せられます。

全ての車山に備えられた、伝統の「からくり人形」を操って披露し、神社に奉納するのは全国で唯一です。

A festival marking the beginning of spring at Dogo Onsen, which is one of Japan’s three ancient hot springs. Various events, starting with the Yukito ritual, are held in part at the Dogo Onsen Honkan, which has been designated Nationally Important Cultural Asset. Events such as the Dogo Onsen Dance, performed by up to 100 people per group, and the celebratory rice cake throwing event, a ritual for warding off bad luck, are held every day for three days. Other festivities that visitors are sure to enjoy include the extravagant Dogo Soran Bon dancing and a local performing art festival that features the Ehime prefectural Iyo Manzai dance.

It is the only festival in the country where all of the traditional mechanical dolls on the floats are manipulated and offered to a shrine.
