Extravagant dances mimicking movements seen in rice cultivation!
A Shinto ritual that has been passed down for over 1,000 years

A ritual that has been passed down for over 1,000 years at Oi Hachiman Shrine, which was built in Fujimori during the Heian Period. Dance performances mimicking movements made during the cultivating, planting, and harvesting of rice are offered on the stage in front of the shrine pavilion every year on March 17 from around 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in prayer for a good harvest during the year. They consist of a repertoire of 25 programs with 2 extra programs, including the particularly extravagant 21st program called the Sarudengaku dance. Eight young men wearing straw umbrella hats decorated with red and white flowers dance valiantly. This is a rare traditional performing art where dances are performed in costumes with multiple colorful women’s sashes attached to them.
During the 2nd program, which offers the most important dance performance called the Futtori dance, an ox takes the place of the shrine god, and is then greeted at the altar.
