祭概要

旧暦1月18日の月の出から翌日の日の出まで、厳寒の観音堂で夜を徹して舞い踊る「西浦田楽」。五穀豊穣・無病息災などを祈願し、全47番から成る田楽が演じられます。狂言風の踊りや、炎に照らされて暗闇に浮かぶ幻想的な仮面の舞が、見る者を不思議な世界へと誘います。伝承によると、719年に行基菩薩がこの地に訪れ、正観世音の仏像と仮面を作って奉納したのが始まり。代々受け継いできた家々の能衆20数名により、厳格な戒律が守り継がれています。

特に田楽芸や田遊びが多く見られる点や、一曲の後にその曲を復演する演出法「もどき」などに、芸能史的な価値が認められています。


The Nishiure Dengaku dance is performed all night in the bitter cold at Kannon Temple from the time the moon rises on January 18 of the old calendar until the sun comes up the following day. Ritual Dengaku music and dance consisting of all 47 numbers is performed in prayers for good harvests and perfect health, among others. The performances such as Kyogen-type dances and mystical dances in the dark illuminated by flames draw the audience into a magical world.
According to myth, it started in 719 when the monk Gyogi visited this land, made a Buddhist Shokanzeon statue and mask, and offered them here. The rigid rules are continually observed and passed down by the 20+ dancers of the houses that have been inherited for generations.

The abundance of Dengaku performances and Taasobi rice planting rituals as well as the Modoki practice of songs mimicking previous songs are particularly valuable aspects of entertainment history.
