280年以上前から酒田市黒森地区に伝承される農村歌舞伎「黒森歌舞伎」。「冬の黒森、夏の檜枝岐」と称される東北二大農村歌舞伎の一つとしても知られており、日本各地に伝わる地芝居のなかでも、スケールの大きさや演目の豊富さは全国屈指です。毎年2月の2日間に、黒森日枝神社境内に設けられた厳寒の演舞場で上演されるのが「正月公演」。地元の小学生が演じる少年太鼓・少年歌舞伎や神事などが10時から行われた後、13時から本狂言が奉納されます。
雪の降るなか屋外で鑑賞する「雪中芝居」。全国から訪れる観客が、寒さに耐えながら芝居を観賞することでも有名です。

Kuromori Kabuki is a form of village kabuki that has been passed down for over 280 years in the Kuromori district of Sakata City. Known as one of the Two Great Village Kabuki Performances of Tohoku, and referred to as “Kuromori in the winter and Hinoemata in the summer”, it is local theater performed throughout Japan and one of the most prominent of its kind in the country for its large scale and repertoire. The New Year Performance is given for two days in February every year in the bitter cold at a theater that was built on the grounds of Kuromori Hie Shrine. Starting at 10:00 a.m., local elementary school children give drumming and kabuki performances along with shrine rituals, followed by the main kyogen performance at 1:00 p.m.

The audience watches a performance outside in the snow. It is also famous for having visitors from all across the country come to watch as they bear the cold.
