小太鼓を叩きながら、鬼が踊る！凄みに満ちた鬼面に魅せられる民俗芸能

鬼の面を付けてお腹に小太鼓を吊るし、太鼓や鉦の音が響くなかで踊る民俗芸能。鹿島市には、最も古い形を残す「音成（おとなし）面浮立」と、複雑で洗練された演技が見られる「母ヶ浦（ほうがうら）面浮立」が伝わっており、それぞれ衣装や踊りが異なります。神様に負けて改心した「鬼」が、シャグマと呼ばれる長い毛を振り乱しながら力強く踊り、五穀豊穣・雨乞・怨霊鎮魂・悪霊退散を祈願。生き生きとした表情を浮かべる鬼の面は、凄みに満ちていて見る者を圧倒します。

A folk performing art where performers with demon masks and small drums hanging over their bellies dance to the sound of taiko drums and handbells. The Otonashi Memburyu, which is the oldest type, and the Hogaura Menburyu, which features complex and refined performances, have been passed down in Kashima City, and both have different types of costumes and dances. Demons who have been defeated by the gods have reformed and pray for good harvests, rainfall, the repose of souls, and the driving away of evil spirits as they flail their long hair.
The menacing demon masks, with their colorful expressions, will captivate those who see them."" Demon masks are painstakingly crafted by mask artists who make precise carvings in wood materials such as camphor, Paulownia, cypress, and Nogomi cedar with a traditional chisel.
